In 2025, do you just Google or ChatGPT? Based on the data, it seems that the world now prefers thriving on ChatGPT for all their queries, questions, doubts and encouragement than the good old Google!
Based on data obtained from OpenAI, the ChatGPT chatbot is now processing 2.5 billion prompts daily, thus marking a remarkable surge. To put it in context, the usage number has doubled in just eight months, thereby putting the world’s most popular chatbot on a trajectory that could reach the scale of Google Search.
According to OpenAI data, approximately 330 million of these daily prompts originate from the United States alone. This signals the chatbot’s deep integration into daily digital routines worldwide. Back in December 2024, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had reported that ChatGPT was handling over 1 billion daily queries. From 1 billion to 2.5 billion daily searches in seven months, ChatGPT has grown significantly.
Has ChatGPT beaten Google Search in terms of daily queries?
Despite ChatGPT’s major achievement of 2.5 billion searches daily, it falls far behind Google’s daily search figures. Google handles an estimated 13.7 billion to 16.4 billion daily searches (based on an annual disclosure of 5 trillion searches), which keeps it way ahead of ChatGPT’s daily search figures.
However, look at this data from a different angle – ChatGPT is now processing about one-fifth of Google’s daily query volume despite being less than three years old. Google, meanwhile, has been around for decades.
ChatGPT’s effect on global internet search is visible, with Google implementing an AI Mode for search results. Google’s AI Mode tries to come up with conversational answers to questions and complex queries. Similarly, Perplexity AI is also gaining traction as a more research-centric AI search engine. Perplexity’s deal with Bharti Airtel, providing a year’s subscription to Perplexity Pro for free, aims to make it more popular among Indians seeking a trustworthy and reliable AI search engine. The effort seemed to have work as Perplexity’s app became the number 1 AI app on Apple’s App Store in India.
OpenAI to make ChatGPT more powerful
OpenAI is not stopping there though. Reports indicate that the Sam Altman-led firm is working on an AI-powered web browser that will compete directly with Google Chrome. It has also launched ChatGPT Agent – a tool capable of performing tasks on a user’s computer on their behalf.
Industry observers note that while ChatGPT may not be replacing Google entirely just yet, it is reconditioning users in how they search, utilise and even trust information.
